I have personally never stepped foot in this place, but I have quite a few of these awesome donuts. I usually wait in the car while my husband runs in and gets 2 dozen. He stumbled on this place while stuck in traffic. My husband drives a truck for a living and has quite a sweet tooth so if he says these are the best donuts he's tasted then he's probably right. This man drives all the way to The old world bakery in Lake Zurich for cheese cake danishes.A second choice for donuts would be country donuts in schaumburg. These donuts are good but, dunk donuts always give us more than a bakers dozen.Maybe that's why my hubby makes me wait in the car so he can scarf down a few more for himself.

There's no debate. Dunk is the best family run donut shop in the Chicago metro area. Family run for more than 40 years. I wouldn't go anywhere else if I lived nearby. Been coming here since the 80s.

I only can say one thing. Best donuts I ever had. Get them, Eat them. Get there early before they run out. The Rush on Roosevelt

My friend from Michigan introduced me to the concept of a 24 hour bakery - something I could only have dreamt of. In Ann Arbor, they have a place called Doms where the locals go for fresh baked goods and coffee. The baked goods this place cranks out is just as good as Doms in Ann Arbor. Cake donuts, apple fritters, baked diabetes. Holy crap. Amazing. When I bring in donuts to my office I stop here and then parade around exclaiming how amazing this place is during work hours. Then I get weird looks when people think I mean Dunkin' donuts. Not Dunkin' donuts lady - DUNK DONUTS *eye roll*. I should probably get a cut of the profits this place generates *nudge nudge* If you're looking to load up on frosted carbolicious NOmz, dunk donuts should be your go-to.

I LOVE when I find independent donut shops - but they are as hard to find as a needle in a haystack - because I am sick of Dunkin Donuts, and the stale, tasteless donuts they serve. Dunk Donuts, on the other hand, are made from high quality ingredients and are always fresh. As much as I love their donuts (and I do!!), I love their brownies even more!! These must literally be the best brownies I have ever had in my life.

I was introduced to Dunk Donuts awhile back. It only took lots of whining and begging and persistence before I was brought a donut, but I finally understood the goodness that is a donut from Dunk. Can I call it Dunk? I feel like this is when my charge calls Mickey Mouse "Mick", because they're apparently buds. I digress. It wasn't until this morning in my half awake state that I finally WENT to Dunk Donuts and in the car on the way to the airport I discovered what I like about them so much. It's not that the donuts are so soft and fresh. No. It's better. It's the slight crunch in my long john. It's not like the crunch in other LJs. They have perfected the long john. They've probably perfected other donuts, but the long john is definitely my favorite. Oddly enough, everyone always says Old Fashioned has the best apple fritters around, and they are good, don't get me wrong, but there is something about Dunk's fritter that I would actually prefer them over OF's. Yeah, I said it. DD's apple fritter is better. The actual place is small. There is more room to make donuts and serve donuts and stand around behind the counter than there is to order, but I'm sure that's part of its charm. I'm sure if I lived or grew up in the area this place would be special to me, because it just has that feeling. I think I "get it", in regards to Dunk, at least.

Been coming here for YEARS. Love this place. This is where you come when you want a FRESH, homemade, non-conveyer belt donut. The apple fritters taste like REAL apple fritters, they're so good. I've tried just about every donut they have on the racks and they're all good.

Having grown up in this town, my family and I always anointed Dunk Donuts as THE place to go for Donuts. If you had anything bad to say about Dunk Donuts, we would literally fight you. These donuts may not look like anything special to the naked eye, but one bite of these melt-in-your-mouth morsels will have you on cloud 9. 9 is the approximate number of pounds you will gain also, but don't let that deter you. Pretty much the epitome of a hole in the wall, don't expect irrational things like outstanding customer service or a big, fancy menu. That stuff is overrated. For example, they claim to make breakfast sandwiches, but I can't seem to get them to make me one. Last time I asked for one, and the lady just shook her head and mumbled some incoherent broken English to me. Fine, coffee and donuts it is. If you're in the area and want an alternative to the huge Donut chain, check out one of my childhood spots. They still go hard.

My husband & I went to Dunk Donuts for the first time on Saturday morning and were extremely pleased. We were immediately greeted by an employee who we told that this visit was our first time to Dunk. She suggested that we pull up a seat at the counter have some coffee and take our time ordering. My husband tried a chocolate cake donut and plain croissant and was quite pleased with his choices. The croissant was warm, light and flakey. I tried an apple fritter and absolutely loved it. It was perfectly filled with apple pieces and perfectly glazed. We were quite entertained with the pleasant conversation that we had with Wanda, Gaby and Chen. These ladies know how to treat their customers and are doing a wonderful job making donuts and delightful treats. We couldn't resist and took a pecan roll and cinnamon roll home for the next morning which were both incredibly delicious. Dunk Donuts is a true gem!

Dunk Donuts, only Bosa is even close to their great flavor and quality. One of the few places where one can find true French Donuts that taste as good as those made in the 1950's. Their Apple and Cherry Turnovers are the best. The donuts are $7.50 a dozen which is a bargain and then some. It is on the south side of the street. The owner is a very pleasant person also.

April 9,2009: Just called to get their hours, and was told that they are OPEN 24 HOURS! Hubby loves the place. I personally think they are too sweet. They get an extra star for NOT being Dunkin Donuts.

Stop here for your next dozen, as I have been for 25+ years. Friends of mine consider their chocolate sprinkle or coconut sprinkle donuts 'to die for'. Well you don't have to eat the whole dozen yourself, you know. I buy a couple doz. for bringing to work in the morning, and watch them disappear quietly but ravenously. My token complaint is that they're sometimes short on the particular type I decide on. So I get to broaden my interest selection that day.

Good apple fritter, great customer service. Melrose Park is pretty far out of my way, but as a fiend for apple fritters, I found the opportunity to swing by one Saturday morning to try Dunk's version. Heartbreakingly, they were out of apple fritters! At 9:30am. The clerk told me that sometimes a customer comes in and buys the whole stock. I want to track this guy down and stuff one of those doughnuts in his tailpipe. What an a-hole. She mentioned that next time I could call ahead and ask them to put one aside for me. So on my next suburban road trip morning, I did just that. At 6am, they had six fritters left, and without my prompting, the clerk offered to set one aside. I swung by the shop around 9, and there it was, waiting for me, like an date with whom I'd been chatting online but was meeting in person for the first time. There was so much expectancy, a pulse-quickening anticipation. Would our encounter live up to the halting dance that had preceded it? We already knew so much about each other, but would there be chemistry? Well, it wasn't a '10' but I think that with a few tweaks it could be. The fritter is very sugary; other customers might like this, but to hit my, um, sweet spot, they could reduce the glaze by about 20%. It is generously sized, about six inches in diameter. It is also somewhat thinner than most other versions, which makes the edges quite crispy (a-ok with me) while the center manages to remain very, very moist. That takes a lot of skill, so kudos for that. There are plenty of apple bits and the overall flavor is very nice. There isn't much cinnamon, but I detected something which seemed like amaretto. Is that possible? If so, it's a pretty genius idea, although in this case it was a little too much. I think that they could tone down the glaze and the amaretto just slightly, and they would have a perfect apple fritter--marriage material. Although I couldn't seriously date a fritter that lived so far out in the suburbs. I tried a couple of other doughnuts which were a-okay; in particular the chocolate cake with chocolate icing and coconut is really good, not as rich as it sounds but just right. All three of the girls that I dealt with on both occasions were sweet as can be, just like the fritters. Big thumbs up for the customer service here. They seem to have a steady stream of regulars, and I would certainly be one if this shop were in my neighborhood.

No frills really good doughnut shop. Not as eye catching as some of the doughnuts I've seen from spots like glazed and infused but really impressive doughnut to me. Walked in and was greeted with a "YOU MADE IT" smile. Really friendly owners. The only drawback for me was I wasn't sure what some of the doughnut's I was picking were so kept having to point ("no, not that one...over, over one more.... yeah that one. ) I'm sure after one or two more visits. I'll get the hang of what's my favorite. Ordered 1/2 dozen and was given three free doughnuts. but I'm a yelp elite free things don't impress me (can't hold laugh any longer) but really enjoyed the doughnuts as they literally were fresh despite me coming in at 4pm, Hope to get their early and have a better selection to pick from next time.

Awesome apple fritters and service. The Asian lady is super nice, courteous, and friendly. This place is definitely fresh and better than your chain donut place (Dunkin Donuts ahemmm) but pretty average in taste and quality. Definitely try the fritters, this is the best from this place. Otherwise you can really skip the donuts. Say hi to the nice lady =)

Great donuts! We've lived in Melrose for 14 Years & have always wanted to go in but never did until I mentioned it to my hubby. He went in 1 day & came home with a box of these delicious things. We had an assortment of donuts & muffins. Everything is yummy. Now he goes in so often they know him by name. They're always fresh & always open (but close early on Sunday). They even told him that if there is something specific he wants that he can call them & they will make it. They make a jelly donut that is actually a yeast donut with the hole in it covered in sugar & filled with jelly rather than a round without the hole jelly Bismarck. It is also fairly priced, cheaper & better quality than the DD chain

I recognize that I have a thing for crullers. This tiny donut shop had three varieties- glazed, chocolate-frosted, and white (vanilla?) frosted. I tried the chocolate and white, and they were fresh with a light, eggy texture on the inside. Delicious, but not the best I've had. Not as much frosting on them as the other shops that I've tried, and the chocolate frosting wasn't chocolatey enough for me. Chocolate cruller - 4 stars. I liked the light & eggy texture, but the frosting wasn't chocolatey enough. Compared to the heavyweight of Spunky Dunker's cruller, Dunk's is not a serious contender. Spunky's has an awesomely thick & chocolatey frosting, and their crust is superior with a fine crisp. Dunk's crust is more of a toughened shell. Analogy: American muscle car's frame (Dunk) vs. Japanese compact car's frame (Spunky). Dimples Donut's cruller would be like a Hummer lol. White (vanilla?) cruller - 3.5 stars. Good, but I preferred the chocolate. Chocolate frosted yellow cake donut - 3.5 stars. Good, but again, the frosting. The cake wasn't dry though. Glazed chocolate cake donut - 4.25 stars. I took one bite and it was so light & soft that it felt like I was eating a cupcake. I originally picked out 2 crullers, and then added a cake donut last minute, and wow, she added in another free!

So lucky to live 2 blocks away from heaven! Best tasting doughnuts!!! Love love love!! Super cheap too!! Friendliest owner ever!! Cash only though. Open 24 hours a day, except on Sunday nights.

i have never actually been to the Dunk Donuts shop. A nice guy i work with brings them in occasionally, and we all think they are terrific! He brings in several boxes, and they have a nice variety to pick from. Haven't had one i did not like. Delish! If I lived in that area, this would be my go to doughnut shop!

The BEST donuts I've ever had. The cake donuts are phenomenal. The frosting is out of this world. Buttermilk donuts? YESSSSS! Layers of flavor in every bite. Heading there RIGHT NOW to fulfill my Saturday morning wish.

  • Manny S.

These are some of the best donuts in the Chicagoland area! Their frosting is whipped and light, long johns are somewhat crispy and very soft inside . Some of the best and we'll worth the Saturday morning drive. Only one thing that bothers me is that the owner takes all the tips from the tip jar and doesn't share it with her employees. Very troubling I seen it happen. So if you do decide to leave a tip don't because it will go into the owners pockets.

Today broke, cold and gray. Rain only made everyone I passed huddle deeper into their coats. The few days of sun from last week are already long forgotten, and once again I entertain the possibility that somehow I moved to Cleveland without realizing it. I am living a Tom Waits song... ...and then I went to Dunk Donuts before getting to the office. It is *NOT* coincidence that it warmed up 10 degrees and the sun came out by lunchtime. The pure heavenlies I picked up had to be the culprits. I almost feel guilty trying to 'review' the 2 dozen donuts I picked up today: after all, I only ate three of them so I clearly need to go back and pound a few of the varieties that I hadn't previously sampled, right? The apple fritter here is among the best I've ever had, and I've had MANY. The old fashioned was soft as warm butter, and far tastier (and this comes from someone whose love of butter makes him half-french). The co-worker who attacked the Long John expounded to me on how surprised he was at the perfect texture. EVERYONE looked at the raised donuts with cherry or lemon filling and glanced around wondering who would pounce first. There were some bagels in the display case, and I got a blueberry muffin in case some truly insane individual didn't want a donut, but Lord knows I couldn't tell you how they were - I was too busy calculating how many extra miles equals a cruller. I will absolutely be returning to this tiny shop with no parking - it sells phenomenal donuts at super cheap prices: what more could you ask for?

Best donuts in the Chicago-Metro area. First time I tasted them was a few years ago via a co-worker. I could not remember the name nor the location of this donut shop. As I was searching for Aracely's Bakery (not for their bakery items, but for their tamales), I drove past Dunk Donut and decided to give them a try. To my pleasant surprise, they are the donuts I had tasted years ago. My wife recognized the packaging. Not a wide selection to choose from. They generally have ready to serve maple, chocolate, vanilla, strawberry, and a few others. The crullers are a favorite as well. Their entire selection taste so good. I can never return to Dunkin Donuts since Dunk Donuts has raised the donut bar high.

Dnt judge a book by its cover! Awsum donuts, idk if they're made in house but taste homemade. Come here & stay away from that corporate boringness!

I was introduced to Dunk Donuts a few yrs ago when I was dating a guy from Melsose Park. The minute I took a bite of thier Chocolate Long John, I was in love. My boyfriend is no more, but my love for Dunk remains. I brought them to work a few times and the crowd goes wild. They BY FAR are the best donuts in and around Chicagoland. This little hole in the wall joint has lines on Saturday to pick up, but worth the wait. One of the girls brought them today and I am a HAPPY CAMPER! MUST, MUST, MUST TRY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A friend has been raving about this place for awhile. He mistakenly kept referring to it as "Donk's Donuts," but I discovered otherwise (Dunk Donuts) when we arrived. I was a bit skittish about the neighborhood, as several groups of individuals were hanging around some of the nearby businesses. Once inside, I thought I was back in the 1960's. Because it was late in the evening (11:00 pm), the selection was scant, but still interesting. A young woman asked what we wanted, and both my friend and I were about to purchase a half-dozen. We were surprised when the woman said, "Just keep selecting more," as they "give away" several more donuts than the 1/2 dozen at this time of night. I think I ended up with 11 and my friend possibly got a dozen at the 1/2 dozen price. We both sat down at the breakfast counter and enjoyed watching a gentleman making the donuts! The machinery looked like it was out of the 1940's. A very old mixing and dispensing unit dropping the batter into the hot oil. It appeared he was flipping them with a pair of chopsticks, and preparing more and more as the time went by. He was an expert at the craft, as each donut came out just about perfectly. He picked up batch after batch with steel mesh trays, placing them on racks nearby. We enjoyed the view, and consuming a few donuts each while there. I don't know if I'd drive way out there again unless I was in the neighborhood which is doubtful. Before departing, I waiting while several "groups" of individuals that were congregating outside the shop finally left. They were looking at my car which didn't exactly fit in the neighborhood, so as I said, I'm a little leery about the neighborhood, and my visits, so this may have been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Would I recommend this place to others? Absolutely, but come in a group, and bring protection with you "just in case."

Good donuts and service.....coffee good, donuts fresh and distinctive!! Hard to find a "non DD" donut place in the Chicagoland area., unlike the West Coast. Chocolate bars were great! The lady was I think offering me more donuts (?) when I was leaving and that's when I took the picture of her with the tray. Dunk is a little hard to find, on south side with street parking or park in lot to the west. Lake Street can get crazy with trucks and the like, so be careful when parking!!

Gym or Dunk Donuts? Gym or Dunk Donuts? Those were my two options to do after Max woke up from his nap...well...I think it's pretty obvious what won. Fatty. Anyways..I TOTALLY almost passed this place up while driving down Lake St.! The front and inside are both pretty dingy and old school, but don't let that deter you! The two Asian women behind the counter were SUPER friendly (almost looked like a mom and daughter) and kept talking to my kids which doesn't always happen. Awww... So I told her I would get a half dozen since it is cash only and I had a whopping $7 on me. I ordered a couple buttermilk, chocolate cake, vanilla long john, jelly and a french crueller. Well...she didn't stop there...she threw in two extra doughnuts and a muffin. All for the price of the doughnuts which was $5.15 with tax. So I just gave her all the $7 while she said goodbye to my sons for like 2 minutes...so.cute. AND so generous...I mean she didn't have to do that! Now to the doughnuts. I tried the chocolate, crueller and the buttermilk and ALL of them are delicious!!! The buttermilk and crueller are my favorites! The buttermilk is greasy-crunchy, in a good way, on the outside with a light glaze and soft on the inside with a sweet, salty and slightly almond-y flavor. Perfection! And the crueller was SO soft and egg-y, just how I like my cruellers. I will def be back and recommend that everyone get their fat ass over there and pick up a dozen...you're hips and ass will thank you! =]

You have to understand that I am truly a city girl - A Chicago City Girl. My car is the CTA. I can barely tell you where Evanston is. If you ask me where Oakbrook is - an educated guess would be somewhere in Indiana. When a friend offered to take me to one of the best donut places in the Chicagoland area, I figure we would be heading over to someplace just outside of Wrigleyville......so, 45 minutes on the freeway later, we end up at Dunk Donuts in Melrose Park (never knew there was a place called Melrose Park) I never judge a book by it's cover, so I was eager to go in and try....... How can these fluffy, soft, delicious spherical things be SO tasty? Too many great choices, so I decided to go nuts and had the nice lady behind the counter fill me up a box of glazed donuts, chocolate frosted donuts, French cruller, Boston cream filled thingy, Pina Colada muffin, cheese danishes, and more.......Truly some of the best tasting American pastries EVER! The flavors were distinctly different from the "commercialized" donuts we all are familiar with. I don't think that I can ever go back to the other guys. Dunk Donuts makes the others taste like drywall. ICK! During the drive back to the city, I asked my friend to drive slower than usual so that I can sit and have a private moment with my box of Dunk Donuts :-)

  • Luke D.

If I lived in Melrose Park, Dunk would probably be my go-to donuteria but it does not justify a trip from Chicago. Dunk makes competent donuts and sells them for a low price. Their chocolate cake and old fashioned donuts were solid if unspectacular.

  • Jacob J.

Miniature donut shop, packed full of some over the counter convenience store items, like Tylenol, chewing gums, cold medicine, four fridges full of beverages and a small kitchen area for the creation of breakfast sandwiches and donut baking (?). There's a counter overlooking the griddle with bar stool seating for up to five, that can sit and enjoy their food. The donuts are better than average, but nothing to yell to the world about. Driving around with Oogie S., I was looking through Yelp reviews on my phone for anything close to the terms of "great food" which brought me to reviews for this donut shop. It's probably around 10ish pm, called over and a young lady replied they were open till midnight. Since it was the end of the night they only had a few trays of random goodies, sweet croissants and fruit stuffed tarts. The selection looked bleak. Mostly donuts with coconut toppings, fresh coconut and toasted. Some chocolate covered with peanuts or almond shavings. Think a circular donut but with almost no hole in the center. The batter is old fashioned, to me it tasted close to the recipe of Entenmann's classic donut or original donut holes from Dunkin Donuts. If you go, you may like to try it fresh from the oven, so an AM trip would be best. When we first entered Oogie says to the ladies, " I hear you guys have bangin' donuts here" The ladies looked at each other and then made a face of disbelief. Oogie loved that he could buy a pack of cigarettes, bangin coffee and donuts in the same place. Four donuts, a pack of cigs and a coffee cost just under $13 dollars, which isn't bad since smokes are around ten dollars. Oogie S. is a fan of Dunkin Donuts and thinks Dunk D rates equally.

This place has been around for decades. My parents use to come here when they were kids. It's a staple in Melrose Park, anyone that has grown up in Melrose has come to this place at least once in their life. It has the freshest, most delicious donuts around. Once you eat here you'll never want to eat those crappy donuts at Dunkin' Donuts again. I have very fond memories of this place, my grandfather use to take me here when I was a little kid. It brings back so many great memories of him. It still looks exactly the same as it did years ago, that old school donut shop look. My favorite donuts to get are the Blueberry Cake, Chocolate Frosted Cake, Chocolate Long John and the Coffee Roll. I always buy a dozen every Friday to bring to work and they always give me an extra donut. The ladies that work there are so nice. This is the only place I get donuts at!

I just want to add that the owners of Dunk Donuts need to replace the 2 griddles that they use to prepare breakfast sandwiches, that is why I no longer order your breakfast croissant sandwich. The nonstick coating (a patch here/there) has damn near completely worn off of both griddles & IT BLEEDS. BUY 2 NEW GRIDDLES! DON'T BE SO CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP!

Dunk Donuts.....this place will be the death of me I am sure!!! Odd hours sometimes....24 hours during the week and I havent quite figured out the weekend hours yet....but everytime I am in the city I take a little detour to Dunk Donuts. The donuts are to die for...my favorite...the blueberry... a little crunchy on the outside and melt in your mouth moist on the inside!! Other winners are the coconut cake and the buttermilk....omg! When I bring them home they still taste good two days later! I am ususally there late in the evening or at 2 am so I usually have the place to myself but I went there once in the morning and found it very busy with truck drivers and people going to the office. I love the place...its my hidden gem. If you get there about 5 am the donuts are still warm too.

  • Erin H.

I live in Chicago and am willing to drive the 1 hr 15 minute round trip any weekend to get these donuts. We've been looking for good donuts in the city and have not been able to find anything as perfect as these. Worth the trip!!

As much as I'd love to visit Dunk Donuts everyday, I love my wardrobe more. The donuts here are phenomenal. I stop in if I want to treat myself or if I am visiting friends and instead of stopping at Jewel for a bland pound cake, I'll treat everyone with some delicious fresh donuts. If it was socially acceptable, I'd wear a donut around my neck, showing the world how great my taste in donuts is. Uhh..........yeah, they are that good.

  • Elizabeth H.

I grew up in Melrose and this place was THE spot for donuts. Recently, I was driving down Lake St and passed the place. I decided to stop and see if they really are that good or if it was the just childhood memories of their donuts that I loved. Well, they have passed the test of time. They are still amazing. Plus, it is really cheap. You can't loose.

    (5)
  • Yvonne O.

Really good selection with some choices you don't often see (almonds on top or coconut on chocolate rather than just cake). A dozen will set you back $7.50, but the service is fast and friendly and the donuts are certainly fresh in this tiny spot. Even the next day - after being left out on the kitchen counter, a french cruller was decent.

  • Johanna A.

These are the best donuts in town. Hands down! The owners and their daughter are always there, working. Sour cream and blueberry donuts are my favorites! If you go at night, order a dozen, they usually give you 4 free donuts!!

Best chocolate glazed doughnuts ever. Yum! And the service is quick. Always have a good variety to choose from.

the donuts were to die for. the apple fritter was definitely worth the trip alone. i enjoyed the chocolate frosted french cruellers. the server was doing her nails when we arrived but was very pleasant. she wore gloves so i was ok but others may not be ok. the neighborhood seemed sketchy but the donuts were fabulous. at an off time, get your coffee somewhere before or after as they didn't have any when we went in the afternoon.

  • Lyn G.

This place surprises you. walk inside and smell the donuts, fresh coffee, bacon. The donuts are fresh and tasty but not heavy. I'm definitely going back to try a sandwich and coffee. It's cash only, just so you all know. It's supposed to be 24 hours except Sunday, but I did go at 10:30pm on a Saturday and the place was closed. I would call ahead if you're going during the off hours just in case.
